IMPLANT OVERDENTURES / IMPLANT RETAINED DENTURES AT VICTORIAN DENTAL GROUP

WHAT IS AN IMPLANT OVERDENTURE?

The biggest problem that long-term denture wearers encounter is the lack of retention and denture movement. This can cause difficulty in eating, gum irritation or the dentures easily fall out of the mouth. All these problems can have a significant effect on one’s quality of life.

Implant overdentures use a limited number of strategically placed dental implants. After careful planning and possibly remaking an existing denture, implants are placed in the jaw bone during a minor surgical procedure.

This treatment option can often be a cost-effective alternative to multiple individual fixed implant teeth replacements.

WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES DOES IMPLANT RETAINED DENTURES SUIT?

  • Someone who desires to have improved denture retention and stability

  • Someone whose medical health status allows them to have a minor surgical procedure

  • A specialized x-ray is taken to determine if enough bone is available to accommodate the implants

8 POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF AN IMPLANT DENTURE OVER TRADITIONAL “COMPLETE” DENTURES?

  1. Implant overdentures offer multiple benefits for patients who have lost all their teeth, or where existing teeth are severely compromised due to decay, wear or fracture.

  2. Unlike traditional dentures, an implant overdenture uses a special attachment system to clip on to the implants. As such, the patient is then able to clip the denture on and off. This makes the denture more secure when placed in the mouth and also means that the denture can still be removed to clean.

  3. Implant dentures often allow for enhanced retention and stability of a lower complete denture, meaning they won’t accidentally slip or fall out of your mouth,

  4. The use of implants can often enhance the ability to adapt to wearing dentures.

  5. Improved appearance, satisfaction and quality of life through increased stability

  6. The stability offered can improve the ability (and confidence!) to chew food, and are able to eat a broader array of food choices, which can have a positive impact on nutrition and the intake of healthy, harder-to-chew foods.

  7. Dental implants function like tooth roots, which helps to preserve the jawbone. This is beneficial, as increased jawbone loss is typically associated with traditional dentures.

  8. Implant overdentures typically don’t need repairing or replacing as often as traditional dentures that tend to wear away the jawbone over time.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ‘REMOVABLE’ AND ‘FIXED’ IMPLANT OPTIONS FOR A PATIENT WITH MISSING/ NO TEETH.

There are two key types of implant denture systems, those that are attached to implants that have a latch system (Implant Overdenture) that enables the patient to remove the denture for cleaning and maintenance, the second is fixed implant systems that utilise 4+ implants to place a fixed implant denture.

Implant overdentures are suitable for patients who cannot have fixed implant-supported restorations because of anatomical, medical, financial, or personal reasons. In situations when financial, systemic, or local conditions preclude the use of a fixed implant replacement.

The overdentures (teeth) are easy to remove and keep clean whereas fixed implant options cannot be removed and can be very challenging to keep clean

Implant Overdentures also provides good aesthetics for the teeth and facial profile, providing an option when lip support is needed or desirable for facial aesthetics.

HOW IS AN IMPLANT DENTURE MAINTAINED?

  • After your treatment is complete, we schedule a few follow-up visits to complete any minor denture adjustments in response to changes in your mouth – if they are needed
  • Regular six-monthly check-ups to ensure that the implants, oral tissues and dentures are healthy.
