Meet the team at Victorian Dental Group

Every practitioner below is registered with the Dental Board of Australia. You can verify any of them yourself on the public AHPRA register at ahpra.gov.au — search by name to see registration type, qualifications and any conditions on practice. We would encourage you to do that with any clinic, not just this one.

All practitioners here are general practitioners in dentistry or oral health therapy. None of us holds specialist registration. Where a case needs a registered specialist — an endodontist, periodontist, orthodontist or oral and maxillofacial surgeon — we refer.

The two registration categories you will meet here

These are distinct registrations with distinct scopes, and the difference is worth understanding because it determines who can do what.

Dentist Oral health therapist
Registration Dental Board of Australia Dental Board of Australia
Typical qualification BDSc, DDS or equivalent Bachelor of Oral Health
Scope The full range of general dental practice A defined scope: examinations, preventive and hygiene treatment, and restorative care within that scope
Treats children Yes Yes — a substantial part of the role
Extractions, crowns, root canals Yes No — referred to a dentist here
Verifiable on AHPRA Yes Yes

An oral health therapist is not an assistant and not a dentist. It is a registered profession in its own right, with its own accredited degree and its own place on the public register. Advanced Scope extends what a practitioner may do following further accredited training. Work outside a practitioner's scope is done by one of our dentists, and that handover happens inside the practice without a separate referral.

Edward (Eddie) Butler-Bromage

Clinic Director & Senior Oral Health Therapist [Advanced Scope] — BOH, GCertAdvClinIPrac (UniMelb)

Born and raised in Malvern East, Edward established Victorian Dental Group out of an interest in supporting the health of his local community. He graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2008 with a Bachelor of Oral Health, subsequently obtaining his Advanced Scope of Clinical Practice, and has worked across the private, public and dental education sectors.

As a Board-registered dental practitioner, Edward's experience is in preventive dentistry — dental examinations, dental hygiene, paediatric dentistry and gum care and periodontics — and restorative dentistry, including teeth whitening, fillings and tooth restoration and fissure sealants.

Edward believes in an approach to dentistry that is evidence-based, client-centred and accessible — which forms the core ethos of the clinic.

Alongside his clinical work, Edward is a University of Melbourne Dental School Clinical Mentor to post-graduate dental students, and a Lecturer and Clinical Demonstrator for the Charles Sturt University Dental School.

Dr Michal Segman

Dentist — BBiomed, DDS

Melbourne born and bred, Dr Michal Segman completed her Bachelor of Biomedicine in 2011 at the University of Melbourne, majoring in physiology, then her Doctor of Dental Surgery in 2016.

Michal went on to work in private practice, establishing her own treatment philosophy — treating patients exactly how she would expect to be treated, with patience, genuine care and quality work. She takes the time to get to know her patients, educating them about oral health and helping them prevent future disease, and finds particular satisfaction in working with anxious patients.

Her interests are dental examinations, dental hygiene and fillings and tooth restoration, with a particular interest in minor oral surgery and paediatric dentistry. Michal attends hospital placements working alongside registered oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

An active member of the Australian Dental Association and Alpha Omega Australia, Michal continues to update her clinical knowledge and skills.

Dr Joshua Felman

Dentist — BDSc (Hons)

Following graduation with honours from the University of Melbourne, Dr Joshua Felman worked across various practices in Melbourne. With over a decade of experience, he joined VDG to continue providing personalised care.

Joshua's continued attendance at dental courses and seminars, and his memberships with the Australian Dental Association, Alpha Omega and the International Team for Implantology, reflect his commitment to the profession. He is interested in all areas of dentistry, and particularly enjoys the challenge of cosmetic work. He takes a gentle and unhurried approach.

Outside the clinic, Joshua's time goes to his family and to sport — teaching his kids to surf, bushwalking, AFL, EPL soccer and tennis, and more recently family and portrait photography.

Dr Samuel Adebajo

Dentist — BDSc (Hons)

Dr Samuel graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Science (Hons) from the University of Queensland in 2017 and has worked as a dentist in Melbourne since. He works at a deliberately unhurried pace and has a particular interest in treating people who have avoided dental care for a long time.

He takes a comprehensive approach, with a keen interest in restorative dentistry, treatment of gum disease, and crown and bridge treatment. His eye for detail is what he brings to the quality of his work.

When he is not in the clinic, Samuel is at the gym, making music, reading, or writing stories.

Corin You

Oral Health Therapist

Corin holds a Bachelor of Health Science in Oral Health and has practised as an Oral Health Therapist since 2022. He provides dental hygiene treatment for patients of all ages, as well as examinations and restorative care for children and adolescents, working closely with our dentists and senior oral health therapists. His focus is on gum health, and he provides both in-chair and take-home whitening.

Corin came to oral health from nursing, where he spent eight years in community healthcare — an experience that shaped his commitment to patient-centred care and to building lasting relationships with the people he treats.

Outside work, Corin is at the gym, hiking, cooking, or exploring somewhere new.

What the letters after a name mean

Qualifications are abbreviated almost everywhere and explained almost nowhere.

Abbreviation Means
BDSc Bachelor of Dental Science — a primary dental degree
DDS Doctor of Dental Surgery — a primary dental degree taken after an earlier bachelor's degree. It is not a specialist qualification
BOH Bachelor of Oral Health — the accredited degree for oral health therapists
BBiomed Bachelor of Biomedicine — an undergraduate science degree
(Hons) The degree was awarded with honours
GCertAdvClinIPrac A graduate certificate in advanced clinical practice

None of these is specialist registration. Specialist registration is a separate category on the AHPRA register, granted after several years of accredited postgraduate training, and it is the only thing that entitles a practitioner to use a specialist title.

The rest of the team

The people you meet at reception and the dental assistants working chairside are central to how an appointment actually goes — they arrange your care, handle your claiming, prepare the room and support the practitioner throughout.

Dental assistants are not registered health practitioners in Australia; they work under the direction of a registered practitioner, who remains responsible for your treatment. All staff, registered or not, work under the practice's infection control, privacy and consent procedures. See our accreditation.

Who you are likely to see, and for what

What you booked Usually seen by
Check-up and clean A dentist or an oral health therapist
Children's check-up and preventive care A dentist or an oral health therapist
Whitening A dentist or an oral health therapist
Fillings A dentist, or an oral health therapist within scope
Crowns, bridges, root canals, extractions A dentist
Emergency appointments Whoever is available soonest

If the treatment you need sits outside the scope of the practitioner you have seen, it is passed to one of our dentists here. You do not need to arrange anything.

When we refer, and to whom

We refer rather than stretch. The common destinations:

You are entitled to ask why a referral is being made, what the alternative is, and roughly what it will cost before you go.

Continuing education

Registration is not a one-off. Every registered practitioner in Australia must complete continuing professional development each year and declare it at renewal, and registration can carry conditions or be suspended where standards are not met.

Beyond the minimum, the practitioners here hold memberships with the Australian Dental Association, Alpha Omega and the International Team for Implantology, attend courses and seminars, and two of them teach — which is its own form of staying current.

How to check any of this yourself

  1. Go to ahpra.gov.au and choose the register search
  2. Enter the practitioner's name
  3. The result shows their registration type, the year first registered, qualifications, any conditions or undertakings, and whether they hold specialist registration

It is free, it takes under a minute, and it is the authoritative source. "Specialist" is a protected title in Australia — if specialist registration is not shown on the register, the practitioner does not hold it, whatever any website says. Ours do not, and we say so on this page for that reason.

Requesting a particular practitioner

You are welcome to request a specific practitioner when booking, and to change if you would prefer to see someone else — no explanation needed, and no awkwardness at reception.

A few practical notes:

If something is not right

Tell us first. Most concerns — a filling that feels high, a fee you did not expect, feeling rushed — are resolved quickly by saying so, and we would far rather hear it than not.

If you would prefer to raise it outside the practice, that is your right. In Victoria, complaints about a health service can be made to the Health Complaints Commissioner (hcc.vic.gov.au). Concerns about a practitioner's registration or conduct go to AHPRA (ahpra.gov.au). Neither requires our permission or involvement.

Who is on the team at Victorian Dental Group?

Five clinicians: three general dentists — Dr Michal Segman, Dr Joshua Felman and Dr Samuel Adebajo — and two oral health therapists, Edward (Eddie) Butler-Bromage and Corin You.

Are the practitioners registered?

Yes. All clinicians are registered with the Dental Board of Australia through AHPRA. You can check any practitioner's registration, and any conditions on it, yourself on the AHPRA public register at ahpra.gov.au — it is free and takes a moment. Victorian Dental Group is a general dental practice and holds no specialist registration; treatment requiring a registered specialist is referred.

What is an oral health therapist, and what can they do?

A registered dental practitioner in their own right, trained in preventive and restorative care. Their scope covers examinations, cleaning and periodontal care, fluoride and fissure sealants, oral health education, and restorative treatment — for children and adolescents, and extending to adults where the practitioner holds the relevant training. They work alongside the dentists rather than under them, and refer to a dentist where treatment falls outside their scope.

Does anyone at the practice teach?

Yes. Edward Butler-Bromage is a Clinical Mentor to postgraduate dental students at the University of Melbourne Dental School, and a Lecturer and Clinical Demonstrator for Charles Sturt University Dental School.

Who is Dr Michal Segman?

A dentist holding a Bachelor of Biomedicine and a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Melbourne (2016). Her clinical interests are examinations, dental hygiene, fillings and restorative work, with particular interest in minor oral surgery and paediatric dentistry. Who is Corin You?

An oral health therapist holding a Bachelor of Health Science in Oral Health, practising since 2022. She provides a range of dental hygiene treatments and restorative care for children and adolescents.

Can I ask to see a particular clinician?

Yes — say so when booking, and the practice will try to accommodate it, though availability varies. Some appointment types are scheduled with a particular clinician depending on what is needed; if you are unsure who to book with, phone (03) 9088 5808 and describe what you need.

How do I make an appointment?

Victorian Dental Group, 291 Wattletree Road, Malvern East VIC 3145 — phone (03) 9088 5808 or email info@victoriandentalgroup.com.au, Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm, or book online. If you are in pain, phone rather than booking online so it can be triaged.
